I've lived all my life in northwestern Illinois. I was born on a farm, and still live on one. My DH of 40 years is a dyed-in-the-wool dairy farmer. He's been milking cows for 39 of the 40 years we've been married; twice a day, 7 days a week. He's also an AI technician. I was a stay-at-home mom while my three kids were growing up, and then I did a number of things; cake decorator, quilt teacher, professional crafter for 20 years, recently retired to take care of my aging dad and in-laws. I'm a cancer survivor, and use my garden to raise funds for Relay for Life. I have 7 wonderful grandkids, between the ages of 16 and 9. I've been a gardener all my life. I come from a family of 8 children, and we always had enormous veggie gardens. The summer was an endless round of planting, weeding, harvesting and preserving. My dad still tends a veggie garden, so I don't plant any here, just help him with his. We bought our own farm 19 years ago, and for the last 13 years I've been doing my best to get rid of all the grass on the acre or so around our buildings. Hostas are my main obsession, but I also love daylilies, roses, iris, grasses, heucheras, tiarellas, peonies, poppies...you get the idea!
The soil in my garden is rich and deep, and I have a ready supply of manure when it needs feeding.
I've had the pleasure of meeting a number of the forum particpants, and look forward to meeting more of you as time goes by.

Dear Linda, what a rambunctious growth of Hostas you
have. Enjoyed the pics of your beds. I also love the
overgrown look. Of course I am jealous of your deep
Illinois ground and of the chicken yard fertilizer there.
Thanks for the peek. Marietta

Linda,
Your garden beds are absolutely gorgeous!! I, too, love the lush look that you've acquired. I never in a million years thought I'd say this to anyone, but I envy you your ready supply of manure!

Linda,

I enjoyed reading about your family & gardening. Your pictures are lovely.

I always wanted to be a farmer's wife. I did live on an acerage for several years while my girls were growing up. It was a good life with veggie & flower gardens, ponies/horses, chickens, pet pigs, little goats, dogs, cats, & 4H kids.

I work with Oncology patients thru a satelite outreach clinic here at our local hospital. I am always amazed at the strength & courage people & their families find during these hard times.

If you're ever coming over my way please try to stop & visit my gardens.

Thanks for the nice comments. Sometimes I feel like my garden is way overdone, but I am in incurable plant collector, and it all has to go somewhere. Fortunately, the shrubs and trees are growing to increase the available shade, and the hostas are spreading to every nook and cranny.
I would surely love to stop in and see you sometime, Marlys. I will have to PM you if I get out that way.

Makes OC jealous of the deep soil and Manure. His dad had a chicken coop full of chickens and penned up yard for them when he was growing up. It was OC's job to clean out the roost and put it in the compost heap. His Small Garden, even though we lived in the city, fed us during the 30's and 40's. My mother taught me to love Hostas and Roses, so we have lots in common. OC also does Daylilies, Liliums of several different species, and different color Cannas.

So look for pictures this summer as they bloom, in each plant's forum......John

John,
That was one of my jobs, too, as a child. We had a henhouse where we kept the laying hens, and also a brooder house where we raised the baby chicks each year for meat. Boy, was that a stinky job! My older brother and I had to clean it out after each batch of chicks was done. The biggest problem with that brooder house was that it was a quonset hut shape. It was so hard to get the packed down manure out of the edges. Big brother doesn't remember at all that I had to help with the shoveling, but I do!
I really hope I have time this year to get more pictures of things other than hosta. I do tend to obsess about them a tiny little bit. Last year was a tough year because of the drought.

Inspired by my friend Renaldo, I have just updated my hosta list today. Hopefully, I've removed all the ones that died, and added all the new ones! I'm glad I'm not this obsessed with my other plants. I'd do nothing but write lists!

Wow, where does the time go? As usual, I didn't get as many pics of my gardens last year as I'd wish. Didn't get my pond in (the kit is still sitting out there in the garden shed!) but I did get a deck on the back of the house. Now the sliding doors actually go somewhere. It's in the part of the garden where the pond will go, so I had to get it done first! The pond project goes to the top of the list for 2007!
I just spend a couple days going over my hosta list, updating and checking it against my 'what plant where' lists. I've pretty much got it in order, but I do have a "Where in the heck is that hosta planted?" list.
Now that the list is in order, I can't wait for spring! Don't have a single hosta seed planted yet, because I have stalled out on getting my basement ready. I guess I won't have to worry about up-potting this year!
Things are changing in my neighborhood. The farmer who owned the field south of our farm sold lots, and a new house went up in a matter of weeks last spring. There's another one now, this one an owner designed and built one that looks more or less like an old farmhouse. Just down the hill another lot has been sold and there'll be another new neighbor. I live in dread that the guy who owns the 40 acre field across the road from us will decide to make a few bucks and sell his off in lots. I'd hate to lose those fabulous early morning views.....

At long last, my new pond is in. I've been wanting one for years, saving up for it, gathering supplies. Thanks to my son in law and grandsons, it's now a reality!
I'm really enjoying it.
For those of you who are coming to the get-together here on June 30, you'll have to overlook a few weeds. I'm too preoccupied with the pond to keep up with the not-so-fun chores!

Oh, Oh!!!! It's January 9, and I've already ordered 19 hostas! This is not good.
I think I'd better get a winter project started, before it gets any worse!

Hey, Girlfriend!

Post by Marlys »

What on earth are you doing buying hostas before the AHS on-line auction has happened???

I still can not buy anymore hostas / plants as there is just no room for more! I am hoping to donate something to the AHS auction. Can't decide what. I better make a decision soon, I suppose.

We survived the holidays nicely here. Good gatherings with family, friends, etc.

I'm excited about the Hallson Reunion here this year. If it happens on June 28th the next day is the ROHS summer tour /auction & people could stay over for it. That would be really fun too!

Happy January!

Marlys, I just couldn't help myself! I don't have much luck with the auctions...my dialup is so slow that I always lose out in the flurry at the end.
I still have plenty of room...good thing, since I ordered some more giants this year.
That would be so much fun, to do the Hallson gathering one day and the ROHS the next. I've been trying to get to a ROHS meeting for years now!

I can't believe how time flies. It's secret trade time again, and I just realized it's been over a year since I updated my page! My hosta list (above) is pretty well up to date now. There's one more I have ordered but can't remember what it is! I'll pick it up tomorrow..and then there's the Mississippi Valley Hosta Society plant sale tomorrow morning; no doubt I'll find one or two more there, and June 7 is the hosta fest at the Dubuque Arboretum offering another opportunity.
I've been moving hostas around for the last few days, trying to make better use of the space, and trying to get some that have been out in the growing area for two years into the garden before they leap next year! I moved a huge Big John yesterday, to a spot where he can grow without threatening his neighbors.
One day I will be running out of room, too! :x  :???:

A nice winter project done! I spent yesterday comparing my hosta maps to the list and found a number of hostas that never made it to the list, along with some that have been dead or MIA for years. DH asked me what I was doing, and when I told him, he just rolled his eyes and went back to his Sudoku puzzle.
How many more months til spring? I have my order in at Hallson's for a few more, but I think I'm running out of places to plant them. I still have several rows in the growing area that are ready to go out in the garden, and I have no idea where they are all going! Funny, though...the growing area is sort of turning into a hosta bed. Before it was a growing area, it was my veggie garden. I'll have to do something about starting a new veggie garden this year..there's no more room for the green beans. The tomatoes have been planted out in the sunny borders for the last several years. For a many years, I didn't need a veggie garden, because Dad planted enough for the whole family. He's gone now, and among the many things I will miss is seeing him out there in the garden in his old ratty straw hat, always with a long-sleeved shirt on to keep the sun off his arms. I have his great old hoe, worn down to a very thin blade by all the years of sharpening. After using it a few times, I know why he loved it so. It slides through the ground like buttah.

Those memories of your Dad..........Priceless!

I hope you have happy memories each time you use your hoe (and I am sure you will).
