Congrats on the new job! I hope you love it.

Also - keep me posted on the garden tour at your place. If you don't mind me crashing the party, I woudl love to come. For the most part, the Tri-state meetings are closer to me than DVHS, so I have been going there instead. Are you coming up to tour Cullerton's and Russell garden again this year? I think it is scheduled for July, but I will check the dates.

Have a happy spring!

Hey, Alexa (and others in the area). Here's the link (new url, same old website) for the Delaware Valley Hosta Society Calendar.

No problem at all if you crash. We're having a Hosta Show that weekend as well, so you can bring leaves or planters down for the competition! Stay tuned for details.

Wow, more than a year since I posted in my journal.

Well, that job mentioned above kept me out of the garden and out of my mind. Now I have a new job working for the Clinton Foundation. And the lab I'm setting up is only 2 miles from home! At the same time, DH left his job and has spent more than a year now puttering around the house and garden. He's about to go crazy, but boy the property looks nice.

Here's a nice photo of that shrub border (the bold-colored one) we put in 2 years ago (is that all?). Vitex just starting to bloom, 'Tiger Eyes' sumac, and purple smoke-bush. This is the look we wanted!

We've also put in a 4th rock wall raised bed. Had no problem filling it up with new and relocated hostas.

How things have grown since I last posted!

This weekend's update was that we had to completely dig out the bigger of the raised beds I described earlier. Our landscape assistant was, as they say, "unclear on the concept" when it came to lining the bed with the root-retardant landscape fabric. Roots hadn't grown through the fabric so much, but had happily grown over it where it wasn't put in properly! We'll have fun planting everything back again.

David, why have i never seen your journal before :-? , it is great :D
And did the journals really start in 2005 :-? Growing old i think, 3 years ago would have been my gues
i'll do one- one day - promise
I have a question for you.
I have planted a black leaved birch a few meters from where I am going to set up a green house. Most of the greenhouse will have tiles for floors (?- can I say it that way ?) but I want a smaller area to have contact with the ground.
You did it with fabric - thanks for the idea :D
So here is my question: Will it be better to add 2 layers of fabric/ will it be a good idea to put the ends of the fabric under the tiles ?

I know birch are problematic, but i love them :D And for now it is so small and cu´te

Good to hear you found a job which suites you, hope it last as long as you want it to do.
Against stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain.

I'm well overdue for an update. The hosta list is now around 280 (next post). Since there's a rumor that the Delaware Valley Hosta Society may be hosting a big meeting, and Teagate will be on the tour, you can expect that number to grow. I'll post that list here rather than overwrite my earlier list. And I thought I could never break 200...

In other garden news, we've replaced some sections of daylilies with hostas, where the serviceberry trees are making nice shade. (No maple root competition there!) There is a section on our whisper of a pinetum where we've put more hostas, but have to be serious about deer spray there because it's right on the edge of the woods. We now have six of the raised rock wall beds, but have found that they need to be on a 3-year rotation of digging (to remove roots, despite the high-tech liners), refilling, and replanting. So it is. We gave up on the various ideas of a Mediterranean bed right next to the house, expanding the stone patio and covering it with a pergola; this spring we put in a rather formal water feature on the edge of the patio.

In the back yard we had to finally break down and install a bed for sunny perennials (no trees or shrubs, unless you count some deutzia 'Nikko'). Right now the variegated yucca is the star, but some fragrant hybrid lilies will soon take over the leading role.

One other new bed is a rain garden/swale bed, lined with river rock, that channels water away from the driveway. Lots of engineering involved with this project, but it's working out fairly well. The swale is planted with a dappled willow, fothergilla 'Blue Shadows', and various water irises. And of course that bed now flows into a bed on the edge of the woods, with a quirky collection of shrubs and perennials (no hostas there).

We got hit by hail this year (again), but I'll see if I can find some pictures to share.
