Post by Rob »

Hello,

my name is Rob, and I confess, I am addicted to Hostas.

I've been collecting hostas since the year 2000, and I now have some 410 different species and cultivars (I'll post my collection list later on).

I started out collecting "the hostas I liked the most".
After a couple of years, I realized this would become a never ending story, and I switched to solid colored plants only (although the odd variegated or streaked one end up in my garden).
One reason is the hostacollection is used for landscaping our garden, and planting out loads of otherwise nice variegated hostas simply doesn't work estetically.

In 2006, I started a website, "The Hosta Mill", that is beginning to mature a little bit now. The amount of time you need to build a half decent site in just overwhelming, but I love doing it.

In 2007, the first hostas were raised from seed in the Hosta Mill. 2008 will be the year of the first hybridizing.

Hopefully our garden, also called "The Hosta Mill" will be opening to visitors starting in june 2008.

Greetings,

Rob

Swapping
I will swap a number of plants this year (about 60). 2007 has been the first year I have been dividing plants.

Wow, what a stunning list!
I only have 114, you put my poor list to shame! If I spent less time babying, I might have more time for collecting!
Great Job, Keep it up!

Hi Izzy,

It's taken me quite some years to collect all this. I believe that's the best way to go about it, otherwise what started out as a hobby will grow over your head. It's quality, not quantity that matters.
It also takes some time before one has the knowledge and the experience to decide which way a collection should go. Two years ago, I chose to collect only solid colored plants and some streakers, and I'm glad I did.

Want to learn about species ?

Post by Rob »

It has taken like forever, but I finally managed to get some intermediate result on the hosta species section in my website. I'm pretty pleased with the result so far.

For all species (except H. kikutii and H. montana) I got the description, a linked distribution map, a list of sports and a list of the direct progeny.

My hostas from seeds project has been very succesful this year. In fact the results have been that good, I finally dare to give some first hand advice on how to grow hostas indoors from seed.
I've also done some experimenting in which tre results were not that great, so I tell what not to do.

The months to come I will try and add loads of pictures on the hostas in my collection and I will hopefully be able to keep you posted on the final landscaping of our garden.

One of the most difficult tasks is maintaining the site in good shape: restore disappeared pictures, delete dead links, stuff like that. I would greately appreciate it if you were to report those things to me (webmaster@hostamill.be)

Hope you enjoy the site.

Greetings,

Rob
