Cross contamination of shared water?

Post by Hey_J »

I have posted this question on the regular "hosta forum", as well,
but then thought perhaps "here" was the place I should have!

I have about 35-40 in pots of various kinds, and I am thinking,
to place as many as I can, in kiddie pools and fill to the top of the pool,
which will leave about 1/4 of each pot exposed above the water. I can fill
the pool less if I need to, and I plan to position them in only dappled sunlight

My question is, do you think having all those hostas together, with the drain holes
exposing some roots, that if I have any with Hvx they will contaminate the others?
I don't know that I do, because as we know, it could be years for some hosta to
show signs yet!

My original thought was that if there is no "fresh" sap exposure they would be safe but,
are they sure enough about how it's spread for me to be safe in doing this?

I'm doing this because we will be gone for a week and I have no one to check on them
for me! Actually, I do but I do not want to ask anyone to do such a huge task. It takes me
about 1 1/2-2 hours to water what I have, and even then, it's not the best watering job that
they should be getting!!!
