Holly's Velvet Piecrust
Holly's Velvet Piecrust
I just noticed this one today, I'm sick. It looked normal last season as do the other two I have elsewhere. This one used to reside near Breakdance and now instead of labeling her HVP, it'll be HVX.

Mary Ann - that reminds me a lot of what my 1st Bridegroom started looking like in 2005. Since I'd had a lot of frost damage that spring, I was hoping it was frost related [although every leaf looked the same]. Unfortunately it looked exactly the same last year when it emerged. I sent a pic to Chris who said it looked like HVX to him. That Bridegroom was from 2002 & never showed any signs at all until 2005. It was removed & incinerated last year.
I was hoping it was frost damage, that's why I asked for a close up
Think it is HVX , but you can cut of a leaf, put it in a zip lock bag and send it to Chris before you deside to dig it up... best I can do
fost damage is still a player, but the hand is not that good

Unfortunately it can be many years before an infected hosta starts to show signs. I've heard as many as 7 for S&S. Just what we need.....something to fret about for years and years! What a shame about your HVP. Such a gorgeous hosta and it sure does look like HVX. I would imagine that Chris will pop on here and give his opinion as soon as he has the time. If he doesn't in the next day or so, why don't you drop him a PM and ask him to check this post out.
And Nurseries should no better than to display an infected plant!! I won't buy from a nursery like that. They can tell me all they want to that they keep the plant isolated from their stock, but who knows if someone that works there takes their clippers and goes around clipping off scapes of ALL the plants without cleaning their tools between each one!!
