Got stupid? lol

Post by ademink »

I had a photo shoot in my yard for a magazine and needed to fill two spots ASAP w/ hosta after removing some monstrous Plantaginea that were frozen and ugly.

I ran to Home Depot...I know...I know.... ...and grabbed Hoosier Harmony and Julie Morss.

My JM looks okay but HH has started to decline big time. I looked at it today and somethin' funky is going on.

There are dying leaves and the leaves that are dying look very virused to me. I wasn't rough w/ the plant so I can't really figure out any reaason why the leaves would just be dying off in a matter of weeks - ie no mechanical damage, etc.

Chris, et al...looking like a HD return?? Is it common for leaves to die if severly infected or am I just seeing the end results of something else?

THanks in advance!
Andrea

Yup, probably cold damage. The plants might have been greenhouse grown or babied their whole lives and need time to adjust.

Virus doesn't kill plants, nor will it dry out leaves.

Personally I could never grow Hoosier Harmony in the ground. In containers, back when we were a container nursery we grew some great ones. But once planted they always struggled. So although I see it offered often as tissue cultures I know better than to try them again.

Of course, after saying that you will probably grow this one just great ;)

Wow, I'm really suprised that it doesn't have HVX!!!! :o

I knew it was declining but didn't know why....and didn't know it's poor reputation!

Maybe they should have named it Hoosier Offkey!

Thanks for your input!

Just one more thing I realized....It has been only lows of 70s or so since I planted this so how does that figure in w/ cold damage?

Then if not cold it could also be heat or drought or if it has been extremely wet it could be stem rot. How's that for a definitive answer?

Of course, considering the source I would still keep a close eye on it. If you get any strange patterns on newer leaves then we could revisit it.

 I like it!

I guess as long as I know it isn't HVX, I'm not too concerned about it!

I do need to check for stem rot b/c I have been watering a LOT.

Thanks Chris!

How ridiculous! I just realized that this isn't even Hoosier Harmony!

It's Midwest Magic. :-? Duh.

They were both kinda midwest names so I confused them. Go figure though, my REAL HH is growing like gangbusters!

 Andrea...Andrea.........

I didn't know Hoosier Harmony was sposed to be a poor grower. I just know mine always gets zapped to mush when we have cold temps. :???: LOL It's come back very slowly this time. Probly has some crown rotting issues. I was planning to move it anyway. I guess I can always try it in a pot.
GO HAWKEYES!!!
