HVX at local nursery??

Post by Kay21 »

I've spent a lot of time browsing Perineal Nursery (and love my purchases!) but am new to the forums. I asked about this hosta on gardenweb and it was suggested I check here. Always happy to add a learning source!
I was concerned about this at a nearby little nursery today. It's labeled Paul's Glory and I wondered if it has HVX? Possibly just damage, as we did have a severe rainstorm last week that included some hail; but it's normally very hot and dry here. Seriously, we're crazy to grow hosta in Utah but they're worth the effort!
So...HVX? or do I need to go apologize to the owner for suggesting he might have some diseased hostas??

Hi Kay,

I don't see any symptoms of HVX in those Paul's Glory. They have a fungal leaf spot, possibly from frost damage in the spring or a combination of cold and wet spring conditions, but I don't see virus symptoms. I suspect that the owners already know they had a fungal problem because it looks like they have been treating them with a fungicide based on the slight white residue on the leaves. While it isn't the prettiest thing in the world and they probably shouldn't have them out for sale like this I don't think there is anything permanently wrong with the plants from their current appearance.

And don't worry if you have told them they might have diseased plants. It might be the first time they've heard of HVX and maybe they will take some time to learn about it in case it does come along in their nursery.

Hope that helps.

Chris
