Hallson Gardens

My heuchera's are not looking the best this year. I was wondering if they have crowns that are higher than the rest of the plant, can they be replanted somewhere else. Does this happen to most heuchera's? Just didn't know if they have to be divided and replanted to give new life to the plant, as they do have parts that seemed to have died back.

Heucheras seem to grow up and out of the ground. They can be divided, and replanted deeper, so they look like they are at the right level.

Sue - my heucheras have done that too. And look a lot worse this year because of the cold weather. All of the foliage hiding those tall stems got zapped on a lot of mine & so those ugly stems are VERY visible. Mine are finally starting to get some new leaves though so there's hope. A couple of them I'm still not too sure about - time will tell.

But you can do like John suggested. And it's also a good time to start some new plants.

Thanks for the good advice. Hope this rain today will make them start to look a little better. Reldon, mine sure took a hit with the cold temps. Sorry, but I thought it was something I did. I was cleaning more leaves off last night and the stems on them look just awful. I will wait and see what they do and will divide them up when they start to look a little better. John thanks for the dividing advice I was hoping that I could save them and have a few more to move around with my hostas.

Sue - when I divide my heucheras I like to scrape off the old 'crusty' stuff on the outside; leaving the stem an inch or 2 long give the bottom of the stem a good diagonal cut with a sharp knife; & then dip the entire stem into rootone. Then just make a little hole where you're planting it & stick it in so the leaves are just resting on the surface of the soil. Firm it in, keep it watered regularly & you'll have a nicely rooted new plant before long. You can also do it without using the rootone - but it speeds up the process.

I started some heuchera from cuttings last fall. I now have small plants started and some are even trying to bloom. I'm not sure what to do next. Will fertilizing help? How do I get those nice full plants that are found at some nurseries? These particular plants are growing in full sun but are shaded by taller plants in the late afternoon.

It looks to me like you're off to a fine start. Those 2 are looking very nice!! They aren't super fast growers, but a dose of fertilizer now & then sure won't hurt anything.

akita, those are BEAUTIFUL starts from cuttings! Can I ask what worked for you? I've tried propagating from cuttings a couple of times, but had no luck except with Bressingham Hybrid.

I really didn't do much to get them started, other than waiting for the cooler fall weather and making sure they were watered. I thought I might be starting them too late in the season, but they survived over the winter. Beginner's luck!

Those sure look great. I will have to check mine again and the ones that are woody will have to be trimmed and I hope to make some starts. I think I will try the rootone. Seems to work on hostas. Love your pictures.

Now he can take care of them and know what to do with them now...THANKS......Do you grow Heucheras in WITH Hosta or as a border in front ?? OC now has ROOM to be thinking about things like this...........OC really smiling today....

OC - I like to mix a few heucheras in amongst my hostas. The colors contrast nicely with each other.

I have had good luck with the rootone. Just dip em and stick em ( in a pot) Then I keep them in the shade till they start putting out new growth.
