Hummers and Heucheras...

My DH took these photos last year, the hummers LOVE our heuchera flowers, even though some of the varieties have ugly blooms. They prefer the bright red/pink ones, and have been zooming around our yard for weeks with all the heucheras in bloom. They also really love pulmonaria blooms in wintertime :)

I think it's called 'Firefly' or something like that, but I'm not sure. I actually got it in a pack at Costco a couple of years ago. The leaves are a plain green, nothing fancy, but I keep it around for the hummers because they love it so much.

Thanks for the ID. My hummers seem to only like my Bressingham Hybrid -- plain green leaves and nice deep coral flowers.

It's funny how hummers tend to go for different flowers in different areas. The ones we see here in Richmond, BC, have a decided preference for our Crocosmia and the early Dutch Honeysuckle and the odd Geranium. Never seen them around any of our Hostas, which many report in different parts, and though most of our Heucheras are finished flowering now, I don't recall ever seeing them around those either.

Great shots BTW Andi!

Awesome photos!

I saw my first hummer in my garden this year. Oddly it was zooming around a hosta ventricosa. It eventually found the Phlox and monarda and has decided this must be a neat place to hang out. I have seen it almost daily in the last few weeks.

Thanks for posting the great photos.

Not but 20 minutes after I did the post above I was out on the patio with the canines and a hummer came over the fence, tried to figure out what he/she could find in the red Japanese Maple, darted off to the Mountain Ash and the bright red berries to be disappointed once more, before the Honeysuckle was spotted and success at last!
