We are students of Landscapearchitecture from germany and try to find out, which new Heuchera-cultivars are relatively dry-resistant and robust. Thats why we have create a survey to evaluate Heuchera-cultivars. We ask you to participate the survey, because we expect from you meaningful unbiased experiences. wow, no wonder the palace purple is the only one left in my garden. This plant seems to be the "undulata" in the heuchera world!

Thanks from me, too for posting the results. I would like to add some heuchera to my gardens, but have had limited success, except with Palace Purple, of course.

Yes it is a hard plant to figure out what will make it happy and survive. I think I have figured it out for some to survive. The info I read when they first came out was they were a shade plant. I think that was the first mistake. Then they said the plant did not need any fertilizer. That is great if your soil is perfect for them. I did not and probably will never have perfect soil for them.

The growers failed to realize the fact that in their garden they have whatever soil they need to breed and grow them. Since this is a fussy plant there is some extra things that might need to happen for them to survive in the average gardeners situation.

I think the info that is given is not a standard for all and perform different in different gardens. In my garden they have to be in a lot of gravel for perfect drainage, topped with pure compost. Growing in Morning sun. I have also had to give them a little fertilizer a couple times in the Spring and Summer. Doing that I now have 20 that have survived at least 3 years.

I am not saying this will work in everyone's garden but that is what has worked for me. This was through trial and death of many.

Where I live (Mpls-Twin Cities), heuchera invariably frost-heave out of the soil, so that in spring I often have to dig them deeper. They survive, however, even when they're up above the soil level -- I've lost very few, but then again I don't have many of the newer, maybe fussier, cultivars. Most of the ones I brought over from my old house were those I had grown from seed myself, and those are practically indestructible. Phyllis
