My Black Lab ate my Black Mondo Grass!

I thought she was playing with a Crow feather and was thinking, "Good Dog!" Until I went out and had a look around for the bird. It was the center tuft of my Black Mondo grass!!!! She took the middle right out of it. Stupid dog.

My new pup was chewing on a Rugosa rose bush yesterday. I think I'm in deep "stuff" with this guy.

I'm sorry about your black grass, it's a pain when pets are naughty.

But, black grass is something I can't come to terms with, it just looks like dead grass to me. Am I alone in feeling this way?

I think it looks good in mixed planters, and I thought it would contrast well with light-colored Hostas. Hopefully, the rest will live and I'll get to see if I like it this Summer.

What are the optimum growing conditions for black mondo grass? I have some that is just sitting there. It hasn't died, but it doesn't seem to be spreading either. I too, wanted something to contrast with my hostas and perennials. It doesn't seem to get very big or bushy. CHAR

It must be just marginal to me. I did uncover it this spring, and it is still there, but not spreading at all. When I got it, I had visions of a nice dark low border of grass. Char.

I like the black mondo, and set it amongst the yellow-chartreuse creeping-jenny (Lysismachia mummularia aurea- spelling?). The grass that really looks dead to me is the bronze one, might be a Carex/sedge? Had a great one from datdog, but it did not survive the winter. It was actually bronze-brown, like a dead clump, but cool with blue-color grasses as companions.

The coolest thing about the bronze sedge was the flower heads. They were all underneath the droopy foliage, and hidden within it. I kept parting it o look for them. I flattopped mine when I trimmed it, not knowing how to prune it, so we'll see what happens. So far, because it is always brown, I can't tell if it is still living. CHAR
