Corn Harvest

Hooray! DH was finally able to finish harvesting the corn field north of the house. The stalks had given way due to some sort of stalk rot, mostly related to the excess moisture, heat and humidity this past summer. He had to pick it one row at a time in order to get through it, and it took seemingly forever. He had to keep getting off the tractor to unplug the picker, something that really worries me a lot. He's on to another field now, and still has to pick one row at at time with his little old front-mounted 2-row picker, but the stalks rot in that field isn't as bad, and it's going a little faster.
Once he has enough ear corn to carry the dairy herd through the year, the neighbor will come with his combine to pick shelled corn. The bigger combine will pick up the downed stalks much better than the little old fashioned ear corn picker, and it won't take long to finish it up.
I told him the other day that I have Dad's old husking peg...maybe he would be better off picking it by hand!
Needless to say, he doesn't always appreciate my sense of humor.

 I love it!! It wasn't a year for the corn crop here either. Wishing him the best of luck on the
other fields.

Thanks for the good wishes, karma. The rest of the corn is now combined, but he still has a few rows to pick as ear corn.
The guy with the combine was very careful in picking, and ended up picking it all one way, rather then
just running back and forth across the field. He was doing his best to get as much corn as he could into
the combine, rather than on the ground. Of course, Monday when he was here to pick, the elevator was
not taking any corn. They built two huge new bins, but only one of them was finished in time for the harvest,
as everyone is quite early picking corn this year. John and the combine guy filled up all the wagons, and then
quit for the day. Yesterday the elevator had some room, so two wagons went over to be emptied. Then
the combine guy came back and finished off the field. Hopefully he will be able to haul the rest over today
and tomorrow, while the weather is still good. They are predicting rain for the weekend...would hate to have
that corn sitting in the wagons if it rained.

Indiana had a bumper crop of corn this year and they have been able to get it picked early due to our lack of rain here. A local grain bin nearby is full and they have the corn piled behind it!

The harvest is complete here. There was not nearly as much corn in the fields as the experts have been predicting all year.
Our yield was down, but still not too bad, considering that the broken stalks led to more corn than usual landing on the ground.
Claudia, I have not seen the corn piles here this year. Our local elevator got their new bins up and running...the last one was finally
finished about the time all of the farmers were done picking. John had to put a few loads up in the bins at the top of the
corncrib because they were out of room at the elevator. Now he will have to run them down, back into the wagons, and then
over to the elevator when he's ready to sell some. What the heck, he has nothing better to do.
