Great Tit

Post by whis4ey »

I think this is a Great Tit. It certainly is a member of the Tit family :)
The Blue Tit is smaller and more colourful about the face. I will try to get a pic of one
Do you have these where you live?

Sam, where I live we only have tufted titmice. Is this the same family Snow? I'm hoping Snow will respond with more pictures for us!

Tits = Titmice = Chickadees! We have several species of chickadees here, Sam - and the black-capped greatly resembles your Tits  The tufted titmice are also tits (of course) - a little larger and all grey, with a white underside and adorable tufts on top of their heads. So yes - we have tits, ours are just.... different 8-)

All are in the titmouse/tit family! There are many more. England uses the term "tit" more than titmouse or chickadee - which we seem to use here.

I can't believe OED was not in on this one. When I saw the title I just knew there would be a play on those words

 Snow! No actually I was quite serious but I can see where you might think that... so sorry. :o See I know you are a great birder and I didn't realize tits (just can't say that without laughing  - no wonder we don't refer to them that way  ) were part of the chickadee family. I knew you would put the whole tit family in the proper perspective.   (truly I hope I don't offend anyone).

:hmm: Do ya think that this is what W. C. Fields had in mind when he was looking at May West and said "Ahhh, my little chickadee"! :D :D :D

 Oh my goodness....only this crowd could take a post about cute little birdies and turn it into something slightly lewd!
(but I'm thinking maybe OED is right about the WC Fields and the little chickadee comment... )

Great picture! It really does strongly resemble it's cousin, the chickadee
