The magpie is famous in song
One for sorrow, two for joy
Three for a girl, and four for a boy
Five for silver, six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Eight's a wish and nine's a kiss
Ten is a bird you must not miss
It was the signature tune of a TV programme for children on ITV here in GB
It is all about how many magpies you see at one time. Some people who saw a single magpie would drive frantically for miles to spy another one
