I'm excited! I'm heading up to Penncicola on Sunday to pick him up. He has been extensivelly cat and all dog tested and while it goes without saying to keep an eye on him untill he learns my bounderies, he is cat safe. He was raised with a cat and has had the clinic cat rub all over him and only wanted to sniff her butt, lol. His name is Dutch and he's 31" at the shoulder and an underweight 72lbs (est. 78-80lbs proper). He was neutered on Monday. Katie won't be happy, but she shouldn't run from him.
Well, it's almost been a week and I couldn't ask for a more perfect dog for me. His big ambition in the house is to sleep deeply, lol. So deeply that I can push his head out of the way to open the refrigerator door and he won't wake up more that half opening his eyes. Only problem is he won't be waking me up to go out in the morning - I have to wake him up. Not that big a problem though, he's very quiet.
At the dog park he gets along with every dog that doesn't try to mount him, and even then he just trys to get away from him and do what he was doing. The last park we were at (with the mounting dog) people brought their small dogs into the large dog area. Thankfully he didn't hurt them (small and furries are still prey). God help an outdoor kitty if I don't see it first - he's very game to get the outdoor kitties. Indoor kitty I still have to watch him closely, but she has been safe so far.
When he's in shape I'll look into lure coursing so he can have some fun in an apropriate way. AKC has a special registry for unregisterable purebreds so they can participate in the events. I'm going to try to get a photo or two of him running today at the nice dogpark.
Thanks. Borzoi is the "official" name, the "old" name is Russian Wolfhound. If someone doesn't know Borzoi I use Russian Wolfhound, same animal.
He's doing great. He can even run with small dogs (they keep coming into the large dog areas. I let the owners know my dog may treat them like a squirrel, he may not know the difference once they run. He likes to play in the water too.
Here's some shots from today:
He didn't lay down in the water today (he did the first time - got a bath when we got home!) but he did splash it over his parts to cool off, lol.
Now THAT'S a dog! I've always wanted to adopt greyhounds, but I think I may have just fallen in love with another breed after seeing your pix. Looks like he absolutely just loves to run. I'm so glad he found a good home with you
