Hosta Newsletter put to bed!

Post by Tigger »

Why did I volunteer to do this? Just starting my 4th year of producing these for the Delaware Valley Hosta Society, and wondering how many more I can take. Our last editor (and current president) did it for 10 years.

At least it was nice to be recognized by the AHS as co-winner of "Best Newsletter Issue" last year (for the Summer 2008 issue).

Here's the latest, if you're interested: visit http://delvalhosta.org/dvhsnewsletter.htm It contains the write-up Bill Meyer posted here about iron phosphate slug poisons.
Our flyer for our upcoming plant sale is also there.

This also serves as a plug to join not only the AHS, but also your local hosta society/club. We love us some Hallson's, but it's nice to get together locally. Why not post in response which (if any) local hosta societies you belong to?

Newsletter editing is addictive. I've done the one for the Canadian Viola Society for about 20 years. Am about to retire when we find a successor. Need to work on an issue right now. Want to come help?

David, You did it because you knew you could do a superb job collecting and editing the newsletter and you did! I hope your efforts are truly appreciated. Congratulations on the recognition from the AHS it was deserved.

I have edited our newsletter for a number of years. I'm not much of a writer nor editor but someone has to do it so I keep trying!

Both of those newsletters look great you guys. Tigger, yours is a little more fancy, but Lee, yours is a nice and easy one to read. I know how tough it can be to work on something like this. Some of you may have seen the one newsletter we mailed out 3 years ago - it was very well received, but after it was all done we reviewed the total cost (printing, materials, postage and time) and it really wasn't cost effective. Sales generated were just barely above the overall cost  That was the only one we produced for mailing, so now they are only sent by email. Still, it takes me at least a week to build up the energy to do one...

Good luck keeping up with them!

I really enjoyed both newsletters. Thanks for sharing them with us!
I have not done a hosta group newsletter, but was the editor for another group I belonged to for years.
It's a LOT of work!
I'm a member of Midwest Regional, Mississippi Valley, and
Dubuque Regional Hosta Societies, in additon to AHS.
I would encourage anyone who has a society in their area to check it out,
and if there isn't one, maybe you can gather a few people and get one going!
It's so great to meet with people who speak hosta language!

When I commented yesterday, I had yet to look at the newsletters. Great job, both of you.

I did the newsletter for the Upstate New York Hosta Society for a while but the fellow, who is doing it now does a better job. In the past I have done newsletters for other organizations as well. Now I much prefer to enjoy the results of someone else's efforts.

One of the huge benefits of being the editor is that I'm on the list to receive ALL of the regional societies' newsletter. Too many to keep track of, really. Lee, I had never put together your handle here with ROHS. You do a great job!

Well done, Dave! Newsletters are difficult and time consuming, and you've obviously used that time to good effect. I'll hope to see you at the convention in June here in snowy old Minnesota, where my front garden (south side of house) is already CLEAR of snow! However, it's good that we have our sale at the end of May, since we may get inches and feet of snow yet in March! Phyllis

Nice job Dave and Lee. I really enjoyed pursusing them. The story about My child insook was really interesting.
I don't live close enough to be a member of any society. Southern Illinois is way down the state from the closest chapter. I wish there was one in Cape Girardeau MO not springfiled MO. That is within driving distance for me.
If I wansn't petrified to do it I would start a local chapter down here. I know it is an incredible amount of work. Don't know if I am up to it.

Cheryl,

How far are the Kentuckiana people from you? Based in Louisville, but they cover a wide area.

Our society just spun off a central PA "sport" (Susquehanna HS). It wasn't too hard for someone with the drive, but it certainly helps to be a spin-off and not a wholly new creation.

Great job with the newsletters, David and Lee. It's surprising how much time and effort go into putting these together. Enjoyed reading them both.
