H. Seducer anyone?

I got H. Seducer earlier this year. It's planted in mostly dappled shade, which gets some direct sun ~ 2 pm for an hour or so. I noticed yesterday when I was weeding that the margins on the leaves - except for the couple new ones have "burned" away, kind of like the desication that Frances Williams gets - only on Seducer it's around the whole leaf! Not sure if this is normal - or due to the fact we've had 20" of rain + extra warm the last 3 months or? Has anyone else seen this? I'll try to get a picture later to post.

Mine has the same desication and was planted this year - I try not to worry about newly planted hostas. Environment has changed so I figure need to let it get settled.

Burnt here as well, but plant has been taking full sun for quite some time, I'm not too worried.

Hi,
I don't have any "burn". A little frost damage on a few on the very outside edges.

Seducer is going to be beautiful. It is distinct in coloration. As it matures there is a influx of 5-6 psychedelic colors mixed together w/ a beautiful 24k gold edge; the only true gold edge I know of. This is the one at the leaf show that stood out to me. Also entered by a worthy fellow; Hans Hansen.

My camera has disapeared? Hope to find it for the many pictures.

I noticed last week that my very young one [4-5 leaves] had done the same thing. Margins mostly all burned away.
It's been in a spot that gets no direct sunlight - just dappled shade. And it's still in the pot it came in.
I saw a real nice one somewhere over the weekend. I'm thinking it was in Walter's test garden.

On this margin burn: I have several varieties of plants here w/ a margin burn. The burn showed up very late. It is frost damage. I won't mention any supplier names. I think many of these plants as w/ Seducer, came from the same source where there was heavy frost damage. It took a long time to show up on how bad it was; crisp brown, folded margins. I'm a little irked about the whole thing. It just seems the plants were shipped kinda under the table w/o telling of the frost damage.

Hope the plant works for everyone.

I just got Seducer at the national convention, and planted it where it gets a couple of hours of late morning sun. So far, the edges are good.
There are hostas that I've had in the garden for 10 years or more that have lost edges this year, when they have never done so before.
We've had such extreme weather here in the midwest...hostas up a good 3 weeks early, completely unfurled when a hard frost hit, then the never-ending
rain. It's been a test of fortitude for the hosta, and the gardener!!!

I've had burnt edges, too, and just general 'spots' on things.

We had a cold winter, wet spring week, hot spring week, wet spring week, hot spring week.....dry, dry, dry....wet...dry hot,dry hot...etc. you get the picture.

It may just be the weather...

I hope it comes back better for you next year.

I'm going to go with the idea that it's a new hosta for me and withhold judgement until next summer. I did buy it because of pictures I saw of it and the very cool color variagation. So - will have to see what happens next year - provided of course we don't have the same type of wacky weather - though it would have to be really strange to top this year!

Just one last post to end this - I was at the nursery yesterday where I picked up Seducer earlier this year as they were having a huge sale. The remaining Seducers that they have for sale look just like mine - the edges of the older leaves are all desicated, while the new growth is fine. So I'm going to go with the idea that wherever they got their plants this spring must have gotten hit with the early spring followed by frost like many of us experienced. I am looking forward to seeing it grow the next couple years to hopefully look like the picture of the leaf in the competition.

One more observation on my new Seducer too.
It has just 3 leaves from the spring and all have lost their margins
which were fairly narrow as I recall.

But yesterday when I went past it, I noticed that the 2 new [in the
last couple of weeks] leaves have much wider margins. It'll be interesting
to watch them mature.

But I wondered if anyone else had noticed that the 2nd flush of growth
on their Seducer had wider margins??

Hi Reldon,

Seducer will have very wide margins, so the thin margins were still just immature. That's great that it is sending out new leaves now. Many of my hostas are busy sending up a new flush of foliage right now too

Not many are sending out new flushes right now that I've noticed.
They may after all of the rain we've had though.
