Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
Today's hosta 'Regal Splendor' - new to me in 2006, was moved spring 2008 to be a centrepiece in a new garden. After the move it didn't bloom until 2010, but is now looking happy. Last year I planted 4 smaller hostas around its base - a division of 'Halcyon', 'Ripple Effect', 'Full Moon', and 'Blue Ivory'. too early to know for sure how well this will work. Blooms over a long period of time. The first picture of a flower I have is July 29 and the last was August 23.

Regal splendor will make a wonderful centre hosta due to its height and vase shape, Krossa Regal would do the same without the edging, both very stately plants.

As with most my Hostas, new this year from Chris. Looking a little ratty as the year winds down. I really like this one and am excited to see it get big.

Here's my 'Regal Splendor' newly planted in 2010.
And here it is emerging this May one year later and double the number of eyes. No complaints about the growth rate on this baby!

Thanks, Ann! He is a cute little guy. Can barely see him in the hostas this year...which is a good thing for the hostas, but maybe not so good for the little dragon. He'll need a new place of honor next to the smaller hostas next year.ViolaAnn wrote:Karen - I LOVE the welcome sign!

Re: Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
I knew that I had a photo of Regal Splendor in my computer but since it was such an early photo I just had to wait until I could get a more recent picture. So here is my trio of RS; first picture in May, the second picture today. Too bad they are full of holes from all the little twigs that fall from the trees. They've done very well this year and the extreme heat didn't hardly phase them.

Anyone know how large this should really get? I thought it would get larger than it is when I planted it in the present location. Was supposed to be the center piece of the garden. However, others like 'Cutting Edge' are larger. I'm wondering whether it's the proximity to the Linden Tree (around which many seem to grow slowly) or whether it doesn't get as large as I thought it would. And I planted several others around the base of it thinking they would be OK but I need to move them.

Give it a bit longer RS can take a bit of time to get to the size of KR.
Re: Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
It's been there for 5 years and I had it two years before I moved it.

My Emma was like that took forever to get to any size, and to be honest couldnt see much difference between Emma and RS other than growth rate.
Re: Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
I planted Regal Spendor in 2007 and surrounded it with 3 Krossa Regals believing it would grow a bit higher than the KRs. To my disappointment that hasn't happened. If you look closely at RS you will see that I had to cut away a number of leaves due to the drought we had this summer.
Re: Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
My picture didn't download the first time because I tried to improve the picture quality but then I was sending too many KBs. Sorry. The quality of the jpeg is now "high" instead of "maximum".
Re: Hosta of the Day 'Regal Splendor' - Post Your Pics
ViolaAnn,
I just measured the height of my Regal Splendor. I have a similar growth situation to you. These 4 hostas compete for nutrients with spruce tree roots. I have 'Cutting Edge' in another section of the same bed:
Regal Splendor: 18 1/2" high (My notes say it should get 30" high)
The tallest Krossa Regal: 20" high (My notes say it should get 33" high. Looks like I goofed up.)
Cutting Edge:17 1/2 " ( the point of the tallest leaf) Overall I don't get the impression that CE is a taller hosta. (My notes say it should get 16" high)
I hope this helps
BTW, the photo above was taken on June 18, 2012.

2014. I haven't measured mine, but it looks good even though it's not as large as I'd like. I have removed all of the smaller plants which were growing around its base. Picture July 27, 2014.

2-15 - Aug. 13. No discernible growth on mine. I think I will move it farther from the Linden tree. But that will have to happen next spring because I have tulips in the garden.

I noticed my Regal Splendor has a scape about 7' tall.

2016 update - I think I need to move this plant farther from my Linden tree as I think it's getting smaller. I think it's also got one section with a wider margin and will watch it in 2017.
