Pic of the Day--Purple Haze
Hi All--Starting today I am beginning a long series of postings about the plants in what Betty and I call the Friendship Garden. This has become the most treasured part of our overall garden. All of the plants in the Friendship Garden were sent to us from wonderful people all over the U.S., Canada, and even Denmark following a serious vandalism attack on our garden in the spring of 2006. Receiving those plants and the outpouring of support and sympathy they represented was one of the peak experiences of our lives.
Most of the plants are relatively young. So, the information about growth rates, sizes, slug resistance, etc. will reflect that.
The Friendship Garden is under a full canopy of mature trees and the plants there receive, at most, scattered sun.
I am expecting Purple Haze to develop into a truly unique hosta with purple coloring extending from the petioles up into the leaf. At this point in its young existence, my plant is only showing some purple coloring in the lower petioles in the photo taken on late June of this year. The plant has grown from 14x8 last year to 19x9 this year, on its way to being a medium sized plant at maturity.

That is a great idea Hank! I may start a Friendship bed here for plants I'm given by fellow hosta lovers! Maybe even add the person's name to the plant label so I never forget who blessed me with it.

Purple Haze on the right in a group with Christmas Tree on the left and Gosan Gold Mist in the middle. Jezebel is on the bottom edge and Toy Soldier. Don't know who the shinny one at top is. Flowers in late August

Re: Pic of the Day--Purple Haze
A new acquisition for me in late 2016 season. The nursery from which I got it told me they weren't happy with the speed with which it had greened up; so they sent it to me as a bonus plant. I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like early in the season.

Re: Pic of the Day--Purple Haze
I planted mine last fall, and here are a couple of pic's that show the "Purple Haze" color that will rapidly leave with the onset of higher temperatures. We are supposed to get to 80 + this week. So I took these today. If you look closely you can see the color up the petiole and into the base of the leaf and on the leaf tip of one of the newer leaves on the larger photo. The color is already starting to fade.

2017 update. It didn't show much purple haze. Photo June 9.
