Hi Cowboy. What a miracle. I haven't been on this forum for years but I managed to log on with no trouble. Your Liberty is fantastic. Hallsons obviously does not have a limit in size. That is great news. Myrle

First time post...
But a good one, to dabble my toes in the water!!!
Wow...great photographs of a truly spectacular plant!
The bigger sized photographs really compliment the subject.
Very Impressive!

Thanks Bkay & McT!
It is kind of nice to have some size to the photos, except all the schmutz is visible.
There is a limit to the size of the photos which has recently been increased to 8mb. I just wish I had a camera to test those limits.
It is good to see you over here,
Cowboy

Re: Give me Liberty or......
Thanks for sharing your impressive pictures of Liberty and welcome to BChosta
Hope you don't mind if I show you the one we have as you enter the driveway here. This was taken in 2011, was moved to this spot in 2004 as a 3rd year plant.

Hi cowboy,
so that's what a Liberty 7 years in the making looks like...BEAUTIFUL.
Double clicking on each of the photos produced even bigger images of even the largest pictures. WOWIE!!!

Ludi,
You are in Philadelphia and don't have a 'Liberty'?!?!?!?
If you ever get to Minneapolis in the summer, I will set you up with a 'Liberty'.

Re: Give me Liberty or......
Here's my 10 year old 'Liberty' unfurling last summer. Once it's all the way out it covers 'The Razor's Edge' in front of it, and blocks any view of the ground.
Definitely a favorite in my garden, and even non-hosta people notice it right away as something special.

Linda P, Another beauty!
I can't help but get a smile every time I see a 'Liberty'.
Has anyone noticed how 'Liberty' kind of glows in the dark at night?

Re: Give me Liberty or......
Cowboy,
I actually have 2x Liberty ! I bought my first in early 2013, and then ordered a second that same year for a friend. However, she ultimately decided she didn't want it, so that is how I ended up with two ... NOT complaining.
Sadly, I almost lost both last spring when they nearly rotted while emerging after a late freeze came through. They both got repotted into the same (but smaller) pot and left to recover for the remainder of the year. Come Sept, they were half the size they were when I had bought them originally.
I hope this year to have them at least as big as when I originally bought them in 2013.
The moral of the story, given its snail's pace, is that Liberty needs to start its career in your garden in the ground so as to minimize the potential for potted mistreatment.
But if I do ever make it up your way I might lie and say mine croaked ... a 'small' division of yours would put me ahead by 4 or 5 years at this point.
Here is a pic of the first I bought (from Hallson's of course) in early 2013.
Best,
Ludi

OK. You've done it. Just too beautiful to resist. I'm going to get a Liberty immediately, even though I have no place to plant it.
How much sun can it take?
Thanks

Re: Give me Liberty or......
Mine gets some very early morning sun and then bright light the rest of the day without any trouble. But the roots like to go down deep and might have trouble if the soil heats up or dries out too fast which can happen in a lot of sun. Once those roots are deep enough to hold its own then the sunlight won't be much of an issue. So give it deep, deep water to help it get going. The surface shouldn't stay wet, just water deeply when you do water.
Hope that helps some.

Re: Give me Liberty or......
Unfortunately, I can't really plant hostas in the ground here in my woodland environment. Been there, tried it, and finally decided to go with pots! Here are a couple of containerized plants. The first is much older, the second one was purchased the year before the shot was taken.
I really like this plant and have 3 of them in all. I also have a cousin - Clifford's Forest Fire. Although the margins are not as pronounced, it's still possesses a commanding presence! I've included beginning and end of season shots from last year.
