Hank - question on 2% disulfton

Post by hubble »

Hank,

In one of my posts last year you mentioned that you used the 2% disulfton (Hi-Yield). I think you mentioned a couple of teaspoons around each plant when you discovered the nematodes and then another application the next spring.

My question is do you continue to treat every year as a precaution, or was that application sufficient in your garden to take care of the little buggers?

I was going to use it last year, but was also concerned about toxicity. I wonder how long it stays in the plant's system. :-? If the 2x treatment is all it takes, I could chop off the flowers for one year to protect the bees.

As always, I appreciate the your advise, experience and the POTD. I've learned so much from you. Thanks!

HI--The nems did not return to the plants I treated. I have had a couple of other plants show some nems this year and I treated them with disulfton. I don't plan on using a second application because it may not be necessary. I suppose I'll have a better idea about that next summer.

The Hi-Yield company stopped selling it because they lost their liscense. Howver the same chemical is available from a number of other companies.

Hope you don't mind me jumping on your post but I would like to ask where you can purchase this chemical and is it premixed or do you have to dilute it yourself??

Anne--Not to worry! I think that "jumping on" is what this is site is all about. :D

I would just go to a Big Box or a nursery and read some labels, looking for 2% disyston. Someone in another thread mentioned it was in a "Rose...and something" product. What I have been using comes in a small granular form and I just sprinkle a little bit, a couple of teaspoons to a couple of tablespoons depending on the size of the plant, around the area where I think the roots are growing. I usually water it in a bit to get it down to the roots so the plant can get it up into the tissue of the plant where the critters are.

Thanks Hank,

I'm not sure what a "Big Box" is but I'm assuming it's something like Lowe's...so I'm gonna see what I can find tomorrow...You have been a big help.

By the way I love your potd and please do more of your seedlings.

Anne--Yep. A Big Box is Lowe's, Wal Mart, Shopko, etc.
