One of my fall favorites

Post by SWMOgardens »

I just love Fire Island in the fall. The bright new leaves against the older green leaves is stunning.

Very lovely. I wish I could grow it, but I have killed it twice :(

Looking good. Do you keep it in the pot all year long?

Fire Island hasn't been the strongest grower for me, but they do tend to get a late flush of foliage that helps it look nice longer. Late frosts tend to set it back here in the spring :(

Paradise Island is the green edged sport of this plant and so far it has done better for me overall. It doesn't get damaged as easily in spring and has held up extremely well here over two summers. I'll probably grow a limited number of Fire Island in the future and grow a lot more Paradise Island from here on out :)

My Fire Island has been in that pot since spring 2009. I use 50/50 Miracle gro potting mix and shredded pine bark mulch. Over winter I tip it on it's side on the north side of my home. It is in fairly heavy shade, very little direct sun. I'll have to try one of your Paradise Islands.

But it is 3 and not 2 Fire Island I have killed, love it, but they have somehow declined from the first week i got them

I bought "Fire Island' and 'Paradise Island' in August 2010. Of the two PI was more impressive in October, IMO. If I remember, I will report my 2011 spring findings. Please remind me if I do not.

I'm quite surprised people are having a hard time growing it, it's quite vigerous for me. It probably in one of my worst areas, so maybe thats the trick.

Mine has grown like a weed. It gets a lot of sun, probably 3-4 hours at mid-day.
Last year it looked a little crispy, but this year has not burned at all.
It's all a dark green now, but I look forward to that great splash of yellow in the spring.
