Growing Chinese Lanterns Plant

Post by bloomsaplenty »

I was given a slip of the above plant with instructions to plant it in the sun. Which I did. While surfing the net I find numerous reference to the plant being a magnet for metallic flea beetle which cannot always be successfully treated for removal.

Since this plant will be close to a crawlspace vent and in a bed of mostly hosta and evergreens I am wondering if it is wise to keep the plant. I also have a small dog so treating with harsh chemical is out of the question. :?:

Hi,

Everyone I've ever known to grow this plant has regretted it because it is so invasive. I don't plan on ever trying it for that reason, so you might want to consider that aspect of it too.

Ditto what Chris said. It is a nightmare to try to contain or get rid of.....

I've also read many warning's about how invasive this plant is, but mine died. I had wanted to grow it to make wreaths using it with bittersweet vines and berries.

I planted this and even though I do like it I now see how invasive it can be. I think I'm going to have to re-do some of the bed it's in next spring to try and better control it.

I would have to warn you to be careful with this one. I planted one small piece about 10 years ago and it went everywhere!!!!!!!
In fact I found a couple pieces of it this year when weeding. It must through seeds for miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the few I ever regret planting

I have also heard that it is very invasive too. I tried to grow a piece of it, but it never took and I'm glad now that it didn't.
