Anyone have this problem? Since I've moved here and started gardening (about a year and a half now) strange daylillies have been popping up in my garden beds. One even bloomed last year and it was orange. now there are even more scattered about the garden growing that wernt there last year. Is someone playing a joke on me? I cant bring myself to pull them up as weeds because I like daylillies and I don't have any that I have bought yet for this garden so I think I will just corral them into a corner of the garden where they won't get in the way of my veggies and flowers.
Sounds like they are the old "ditch lillies" that you see growing along the roadside. We've got them all over the place here in Tenn. Beautiful flowers, esp. in mass plantings. Your idea of gathering them all up is a good one.

It could be dormant seeds from a clump that may have been at the house at one time and as you are working the soil the seeds are moved near enough to the surface to sprout ...
Also if there is the tiniest bit of root then the daylilies will grow ... if you've been getting plants from friends' gardens you could have imported some root pieces that are now developing into plants old enough to bloom.
Also, if you are getting soil from an place that had those daylilies in it ... sifting could still have a few small root pieces retained in the soil that you've put in the garden ...
Also, if a neighbor has a clump of the orange daylilies "critters" could be helping you plant your garden.
I have a clump of Kauffmania tulips and last spring I noticed a single kauffmania the I never planted come up in a spot across the garden ... I believe squirrels ...
Also, I occasionally find a stray and partially chewed "mystery" bulb in the garden where the squirrels have deposited it ...

That run up the side of his driveway to the sidewalk in front of the house. In masses they ARE pretty. Keep them and make a new bed for them. They move easily but are hard to get rid of. To thin his out, O.C. invited several friends over last fall to dig up all they wanted in spaces several feet apart. Thought it might give them more space. Witrh all the rain we have had, the bed is full and doesn't even look like any were talen out. So much for thinning...

Actually, (I know I am replying just a touch late ) you could grow them in your veggie garden. Nearly every part of the wild daylilies are edible.
rhizomes: wash and boil like potatoes
green buds: wash and steam like green beans or throw in a soup or stew like beans or okra (only its less slimy and furry)
flowers: salads, soups and stews
Before criticizing someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them you will be a mile away and have their shoes!
