What's your latitude.....
... as in Northern latitude for the bulk of us, seeing as most who frequent and post this forum live in the Northern hemisphere, but it would be interesting for those down under as well.
I made a couple of topic replies over the past couple of days, both of which involved reference to sun exposure and the need to specify from which latitude your perspective is, be it a question or an answer.
Most of us in our profile have our location detailed, but I think it would be of benefit to all if we took the time to research what our latitude is for that location and specify it.
When I get home later tonight I'll flesh this out with some more detail on how to get the information required.

My fine city hall says:
Ottawa can be found at Latitude 45° 22' N and Longitude 75° 43' W, and it is 114 metres (374 feet) above sea level.
(but hey, Pieter... you already knew that...I know you did!)
Oh, and we beat the record high temp for 24 May today - 32C! a tad warmish.... the garden's wilting.

If I did it right it's now in my sig. I don't have an avatar so couldn't add it there. Found both latitude and longitude for Canandaigua.

Boy, I'm tickled pink to see I've touched a nerve with some of you, WAY TO GO!
As you see, I have just updated my profile and the latitude in my backyard is what is reflected. In your backyard you ask? Yes, in my backyard. And I got that by using Google Earth to zoom in on my address; not only does that give latitude and longitude, but also elevation. If you have never tried Google Earth, it a fascinating freeware program you can use to get a close-up view almost anywhere in the world. Check it out and download it here: http://earth.google.com/#utm_campaign=e ... le%20earth
So now you're gonna ask why I looked it up on Wikipedia for the other posts? Well, it's like this, those two were done from work
and I didn't have Google Earth on that box. When I started to reply to this thread later from home I first went to Wikipedia and then suddenly realized I have Google Earth on my 'puter @ home and then switched to it to get the most accurate information I could.

I found a quick & easy site to find out your personal latitude & longitude. Just type in your address & it will compute your L&L for you.

[But there were 2 given - not sure why cuz one was for a little town near here - the street was the only thing the same in the 2 addresses.]
Latitude = 40° 59' 17.6676"
Longitude = -94° 44' 28.014"

Were they all 3 for your exact address, Ginger?
When I did it - my address was under the boxes of the L & L.
If all 3 were for your address, then I'm guessing it's differences in the 'providers' of the info. The one for the wrong address for mine was Yahoo & the correct one was Google I think. Maybe somebody's GPS coordinates were slightly off...

Well Ginger, it's like this: as you can tell from your latitude and mine, there is give or take about 14 degrees difference between us in latitude and consequently the angle with which the sun hits us and our plants. In your location the sun's angle is steeper, the sun and UV much more intense than mine.
If I were to make sort of an off-the-cuff remark about how I was quite able to grow Gold Standard in direct sun exposure of around 6 hours and not suffer any noticeable burn-out and you were to take me at my word and try and duplicate without taking all the variables into consideration you'd wonder why it isn't the same for you. Sun exposure is a combination of length of time and intensity and if all you focus on is the length of time you're going down the wrong path.
We regularly see posts where references are being made as to how well it does or does not grow in part sun/part shade and full sun. Those remarks can be put into much better context for the reader when the latitude for the poster and reader is known. And in this context, it's only the latitude that is important for comparisons, longitude has absolutely no bearing, but elevation and climate zone of course do. That's why I didn't bother with longitude in my profile.

Thanks for the explanation Pieter
Living in OK most of my life, I understand that just because something says "full sun" that does not mean it can take our kind of "full" sun. As a general rule of thumb, I deduct apx 2 hours of sun when determining how many hours of sun I should give a plant in my climate. If it says 4-6 hours of sun, I translate to 2-4 hours. But understanding the latitude helps me even more
Thanks and have a great weekend!
