Just lost my house sale due to my hostas...

Talk about hostas, hostas, and more hostas! Companion plant topics should be posted in the Shade Garden forum.

I agree with MollyD, pot them all. If you can't fit the entire plant in the pot, pot as big a division as you can.

Then - and here's where I differ from Molly, based on experience - come fall, sink the pot level with the ground, and add a shovelful of dirt into the pot so it's filled to ground level. It'll overwinter like that perfectly, or I should say: I guarantee that in our Ontario climate hostas survive this process with no ill effect. I've overwintered "potted+trenched" hostas of all sizes this way, from the teeniest to several-gallon sized, over several winters. The only (minor) losses are due to frost heave + critter munching of the teeny ones. A stone or two on top of the roots prevents the former, and some wire mesh could do wonders with the latter, although I think a shovelful of dirt does the job just as well. I make sure to place the trench on the least sunny side of my house, so it stays evenly cool & least susceptible to winter/early thaw until spring really truly arrives.

Another approach, perhaps more labour intensive, is to find/borrow/rent a friendly piece of land and move (ie, move bare-root & plant) your hostas there pending the move, then move them to your new property once it's yours. This is not a bad idea - it separates the plants from the stress of sale+moving altogether, and allows you to move them at YOUR convenience. I did it a few years ago and all my hostas did fine, except that winter winds and critters scattered the tags all over the place and it took me some time to re-label them correctly. In fact, I STILL can't tell which is Elegans, and which is Bressingham Blue! The other 50 are correctly labeled by now :P .

Bottom line: moving hostas takes some planning & elbow grease but is eminently doable.

The trench method might be a better guarantee of survival, but couldn't the containers become frozen in place and difficult to remove, should this become necessary at an inopportune time?

BRESSINGHAM BLUE should have far larger leaves with more textured leaves, seersucker-like, in comparison to HALCYON.

Digs the problem with sinking them in the ground is that they may need to move them in the dead of winter. Once the ground is frozen there is no getting them out! Your idea of placing them in borrowed space is pretty good if it's where they can be watered and watched easily. Not open to salad munchers.
John that's why I suggested a tarp under the pots. Easier to get them off a tarp than the ground.

Er, John, I have no trouble ID'ing my Halcyon - it's the distinction between BB & Elegans that's still stumping me.

But thanks for your effort!

Thanks for all of your thoughts, you are right that moving them ahead of time would be best. We hadn't expected to move, and once we decided to move it was too late.

The good news is that we got another offer (higher than the first) and they are letting me keep the hostas. :D I can take 20 whole hostas, and divisions of the rest. I thought this was fair. We close a month later than the first, so that takes up any gains in price we made, but over all we are happy with how it worked out.

I got some pictures this spring of the gardens "finished", I'll try and post them. It will be another few years before I can say the gardens are "finished" again... :)

Congrats on the new offer, Frodo! I hope this one goes through smoothly, without a hitch. Good luck moving your hostas! :D

Woo hoo, Frodo, that's wonderful!! I said above that maybe the right buyer was just around the corner -- maybe that's what these people are. They're letting you have some and they'll treasure the rest. Hoping all goes perfectly from here on out.

I've appreciated the suggestions on this thread as I'll be moving mine for spring transplant . . . I've gotten some good ideas and think I know how I'm going to proceed. Thanks to everyone who, in helping Frodo, also helped me!!

I still have a hard time with a buyer dictating what plants in your landscape you can take with you. I would state right up front, the plants don't stay unless I decide they do.
For my part, I would not want someone elses landscape (well unless it is Hanks or some of the others who show such beautiful gardens). I would expect to design my own, or use theirs as a base to start my own.
You are alot nicer than me :o
But, hey, mine are in pots now so if I move, they will be ready to go to
