help i.d.ing!

Post by creatingadream »

Hi everyone! I need help identifing these two hostas. I got them from my friend's mother's garden. They are selling the house and the garden is full of unusual or interesting plants. Any guesses will be appreciated!

Unknown hosta #1 (leaf size 12" long by 6.5" wide):

Unknown hosta #2:

There are so many folks on this forum with more knowledge than I have, but here goes...

Could #1 be a young Beckoning?

#2 Either Blue Shadows or tokudama Aureonebulosa.

I agree with tokudma Aureonebulosa or Blue Shadows for the second one. Oddly enough, I thought of Beckoning for the first one, too, but it's hard to tell from one eye. I would be inclinded to think that it might be something that's been around a while, not having seen the garden.
Are these divisions of mature plants? Any chance you can get a pic of the whole plant? That would help considerably in ID'ing it.

From what you say, I'm going to guess that both hostas have been there a while. So I'll guess Paul's Glory for the top & Tokudama Aureonebulosa.

I think you are all probably right about tokudma Aureonebulosa or Blue Shadows on the second one. Thanks, I don't already have it in my garden so it's a welcome addition!

As for #1... she had a few of these in some fairly heavy shade like maybe she had divided the original and filled in some areas with the divisions.

All were smooth leaves like the one I got. None had any kind of corrugation at all.

The plants were all about 2 feet tall and leaves were about 12" x 6.5".

I'm not sure if any of them were the mature plant. They all looked about the same as the one in the picture.

Hmm.. I don't know.. this hosta looks very different from my own Paul's Glory. Mine has smaller leaves and seems to have some puckering. The yellow on my PG also turns white as the summer progresses and Unknown#1 doesn't seem to be doing that.

I appreciate your help in figuring out this mystery hosta, everyone! Any more guesses?

I'd throw Bright Lights in as an option for #2. Really just a more vigorous Tok. A-N form.

For #1, can you rule out Gold Standard? It's a stretch, but certainly a very available hosta that might grow well and get divided/spread around. It can look very different depending on light conditions.

Can Gold Standard and Paul's Glory get leaves that big? Mine hasn't but perhaps they aren't mature enough? I have both GS and PG and this plant looks quite different. But it's true about hostas looking different in different growing conditions. What do others think?

Wow! I have never seen such a huge leaf on a Gold Standard! Very impressive! Well, I guess I will wait to see what I have in the next few years. I will definitely consider Gold Standard and maybe even Paul's Glory. Thanks Carol!

Diane I not sure if that's a Gold Standard or Pauls Glory as it has 10 veins whereas my Gold Standards here have 7-8. Plus the leaves on the one unsure of has a blue wider margin and the Gold Standard is green thinner margin. I have 2 of each PG and GS. One set of PG? - GS is planted in more shade, the other PG? - GS is in a sunny location, both the PG? have a blue margin.

I am thinking f. Albopicta for the first one. I say that because mine still look like that and haven't turned all green yet. That would be the test. If it stays the same color, we know it isn't Albopicta. And I agree that it is tok. Aureonebulosa. One of my very favorites.

Could the first one be Gold Standard that has been growing in the shade?

Here is a list of the yellow with green margins in my garden, I first thought of September Sun, then Lunar Orbit, Janet, Hoosier Harmony, Journey's End, Alice in Wonderland & of course as some have mentioned above, Gold Standard.

Definately not Hoosier Harmony. That one is a sport of Honey Bells, isn't it? Mine is much brighter and shinier (however you spell that).

I still can't seem to narrow it down to a definite on #1 but I'm rooting for your guess, ademink and others with the same guess! lol!

Please keep guessing, everyone. I will consider all as I watch this hosta grow. I may figure it out someday. :)
