Ohio - Carnation Mall Saturday leaf and flower show
I'll be going to Alliance OH to enter leaves in the flower and hosta show tomorrow morning (Saturday) from 9 to 11 am and after 5 pm.
Bill Zumbar runs the flower show, it's an annual event held in the Carnation Mall. (Part of the Carnation Festival)
Bill is responsible for some cool plants (Dress Blues, Moonstruck, Sultana, Just So, Puck, Limey Lisa)
If anyone is free, come on down, you should enjoy it.

Re: Ohio - Carnation Mall Saturday leaf and flower show
We had a fun time, especially my Nieces and Nephew, who entered leaves from my Sister's garden.
My Niece (8 yrs old) got best of show, with a Halcyon leaf. She was very excited!
I entered 16 leaves myself, got no blues, 1 red, 3 white (honorable mention).
The judges were flower judges; I think they were judging leaves based on how good they might look in a flower arrangement.
Didn't take my camera.
I enjoyed talking with Bill Zumbar, got some tips on zumbarizing and bud isolation, and showed him my two best seedlings which he liked. (Fontainebleau and the gold OMTxStardust)
Dragon Tails is Bill's plant, has been around for a long time he told me but just got TC'ed by Shady Oaks.
Bill also helped isolated the leaf sport that became Cadillac. He told me that his friend who introduced it had a single leaf and didn't know how to get it to produce an eye, so Bill went to his garden and cut the crown on the plant in the ground to isolate the bud. It's a shallow vertical cut on each side of the leaf, and dusted with fungicide.
They give a lot of the flowers to people at the end of the show, a few of my family members went home with some gorgeous dahlias and roses. Bill gave his beautiful arrangement of red and white carnations to my aunt.
Afterward I went to my cousin's house. They live in a house that Belonged to my Grandfather's brother, and My Great Grandmother lived with them whe I was a kid. I helped identify some hostas they have (Guacamole, Christmas Tree, Undulata, Elegans, Krossa Regal, Lancifolia.) She recently bought a Red October, so I was pretty impressed that she was a potential hostaholic! Now to have them come visit my place, so I can really get her going!

Hey Dave! Congrats to your niece! How exciting to win a top award like that! Sounds like you're going to turn almost all of your family members into hostaholics.

Re: Ohio - Carnation Mall Saturday leaf and flower show
Sounds like a fun day for your family, Dave!!
Your niece should be hooked now. I can attest to how addictive leaf shows can be when you win something big.

It is always the second Saturday of August, so you could plan for next year. We do our family reunion every two years, in Louisville.
