Help with ID

Post by mooie »

Here's 3 plants for you to start guessing on. I have these planted in the new bed out front. Which is the only place I can plant until they get the new siding put on. The first one could be St. Paul, or Lakeside Shoremaster or Paul's Glory......I don't have a clue on the others..

all good guesses, I think

on the first, I can easily tell the difference between St. Paul and Paul's Glory in my garden because I have both... St. Paul (and Paradise Glory) are tetraploid sports of Paul's Glory, so they color up faster and have thicker leaves - but all three are clearly related and similar. Still... there are so many good yellow-centered, green-margined, medium-to-large hostas, its hard to know which one you have

the second one - I can't guess because the picture doesn't really give any size reference. Carnival? could be, but that means its a pretty big plant and it hasn't had time for the leaves to go into the carnival-contortion phase... If it is a smallish plant, it could even be Golden Tiara.

I'm particularly weak on the light center, lighter edge hostas... took a long time for them to grow on me... Hosta Moon Glow is an older one... 1977 registration... so its around in a lot of older collections.

Hallo jgh,

Carnival because the cream-white edge shows signs of burning (FW-heritage). If it is a smaller one i really do have no idea. :hmm:

Well, I've never had Carnival, or Moonglow. Think that the 3rd pic could be Blazing Saddles? I will retake pic of the 3rd one. I'm thinking now that the first one is Paul's Glory.

Ok it's not Blazing Saddles. It's still sitting unplanted by the tree. In that area it was dug from was a Fragrant Bouquet. Maybe? The other(third one) 'could' be Last Dance??

Ok,   just quit guessing now...I determined that the second one was Dust Devil by process of elimination, and the third one cannot be anything 'Fragrant' because I went across the street and it's still there. Along with the Forest Fireworks and Last Dance. I left them behind why??

Went to the back yard where several trees are lined with hostas to plant yet and just started pulling them out and apart and setting them separate so I can see what's what.
First off, what it labeled Alligator Shoes is definitely Earth Angel and there is no way that white edged green one is Abiqua Drinking Gourd! It's not even in the area!! (I'm supposed to be getting ready for a garage sale, not sorting hosta! )

Think I will have a few libations this evening and make a list of for sure plants and see what happens. It's just driving me crazy! Have not reached the point of acceptance yet...

one tip, Teresa... you mentioned Last Dance... that whole family - Summer Music, Summer Breeze, Summer Lovin', etc. seem to have a particular combination of green and yellow early in the season...

the particular combination of color and contrast is pretty uniform through the family and is unlike any of the other hostas in my collection... when walking around my garden, I may not immediately be able to come up with the right name from my Swiss-cheese memory, but I know from a distance if the plant is one of that family

so if you look at the Last Dance across the street and then seek out that color combination in your unknown group, it might narrow down an identification for you.

Here is a close up of the original pic #3. Gives the leaf detail a little better. I think the scorching has come from the stress of transplant, new location, wind. Plant itself seems healthy. Found my ABG by the way. Promptly labeled it!

First - Paul's Glory, I feel very confident.

Second, not a sport of whirlwind like Dust Devil, the leaves would be upright. Looks like El Capitan to me. A little like Lil Abner or Rosedale Misty Pathways. Carnival... well maybe but it looks better than Carnival.

Could the last one be Diana Remembered?

Dave mentioned El Capitan for #2 but it looks nothing like mine. Mine has several different shades of cream/yellow/white in the margin & the leaves are more upright.

I'd guess Paul's Glory for #1, too. Doesn't St. Paul have a wider margin than PG? If it were Julie Morss, the center variegation will start to darken in the next month or so. Mine has looked really nice this year, but I know it won't for much longer.

No ideas for #3. Too many possibilities. But Moonglow was mentioned. I thought it was all yellow... Was Moonlight what was meant?? It looks similar to your plant.

And are libations before making the list really a good idea?? :???:
