Where to start?

Post by Linda P »

I took some pics of my garden today, and now I have to decide what to post first!
We've had lots of rain, as have most of you in the midwest, and the hostas are just huge.

Linda - The hostas are huge here too! Yippee!!! :D except for the deformed foliage ones from too much fertilizer / or cold / or something! Things are so big / crowded that all the plants are are going straight up / no mounding here this year.

Today Ron helped me dig out a huge hosta that was suppose to be 'Gunther's Prize but turned out to be whatever it feels like being / an assortment of Sum & Substance sports. We mowed it to his side of the driveway / yard. He told me not to go thinking I will be the boss of things over there just because my hostas are over there now. It is the deer-food side of the yard.

I am still trying so hard to convince Ron to actually put up that deer fence. Since the neighbor's dogs came over and destroyed things the other day Ron is actually talking about extending their board fence to the front part of the yard. I was so upset I hardly slept for 2 nights. My new neighbor is a jerk!!! He let his dogs out to play when they have a huge fenced-in backyard to play in. So DISRESPECTFUL!!! So it would be easy to hook some electric wire onto for winter / spring. :!:

Linda, that's so beautiful and the hosta look lush from all the rain we've had! I love how they are packed in there leaf-to-leaf. I'm still waiting for my new beds to do that!!

Keep posting pics!

Thanks, people. I am just so crazy about my hostas after that long winter I can't stop looking at them!
Marlys...you crack me up! How on earth would Ron ever get the idea that your NOT the boss of his side of the yard. Oops, that's right... you let him think that.
I'd have to do something about that dog situation too. We had a rottweiler and cocker spaniel who came running through the yard several times a day when their owners lived down the road. The big one took out the tall hostas, the little one shredded the smaller ones. I finally got wise to the schedule of when they let the dogs out, and went out and chased them off. I kept my water hose handy and sprayed them a few times, and then they stayed out of the garden (more or less). John went down and told them they needed to keep their dogs out of our yard or he was going to tie them up and call dog control. NO tags on either of them, so who knows? Anyway, the next thing the big dog did was start chasing the calves around in the barnyard. He was trying to play with them, not hurt them, but it's not good anyway. After John went down that time, the dogs didn't come back, and then the people moved out.
LG..so sad you can't make it, we'll miss you!
Jane..yours will get there soon...you have a good start already. BTW, I do still have an Osprey here that can go to your house if you need it!

wow... that last picture is really a great example of the impact a mass planting can make... just wow.

Osprey? - don't see that one very often... really slow for me, but a really good blue color... I think of it as one of the Eric Smith - tardianna grex that just kind of got passed by by showier hostas, but well worth a second look...

Now, can anyone tell me why it is that I seem to need to keep adding more hostas when I have so many nice ones already? I kind of thought that once the older ones got some size to them I wouldn't be so anxious to add more. Must be a form of insanity.
One day I will have to stop, too, LucyGoose. I have a few places where I could remove my multiples of the old reliable plants I started with, but they're all so big I'd need a backhoe.
jgh, Alexa, HD, Renaldo, thanks. If you all want to come over with a bunch of buckets, I can fix you up with some good old cow manure. That stuff really helps the hostas grow, and a little goes a long way!

I'd love those buckets of chicken poop - maybe we could pop one of those hostas in each to keep the dust down on the drive home???

that reminds me... I'll make a post on Garden Bench for Minnesota - Twin Cities gardeners on the most amazing source of manure/compost...

Hey Linda that cow manure sure works great. Makes the hosta's grow really big, especially this year. I don't have near the hosta's that you have but I sure want them all. Yes it is a disease that I sure hope they don't find a cure for.
Take care
Sue
