Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
OK - I'm move 'em around mode - too big for here, it has to go there; looks OK here, will look better there. We're all gardeners so I KNOW that you all know where I am coming from. So - I have a spot that needs a good blast of dark green next to "Cadillac" and in front of "Sunshine Glory". Both are in at least 6 hours of sun each day - about 4 of those hours are early-mid afternoon. Nice green (and appropriate in size) hostas I have to move include:
Lakeside Lollipop
Lakeside Looking Glass
Invincible
Lakeside Black Satin
Quilting Bee
Emeralds & Rubies
Thanks!
Louise

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
The only one I've grown in a lot of sun is Invincible, and although it was smaller it always looked good. The Lakesides will probably be fine (how does Ventricosa do in the sun?) but won't be as dark green as they might be in the shade.
Hope that helps a little.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
Chris--Ventricosa grows like a weed in full sun, but loses it's beautiful dark coloration, much of it's ruffling, and the slightly matte finish as well. It becomes a fairly light, flat leaved green with no particularly distinguishing features, which is the polite way to say boring.
Many of the very dark hostas will lighten in full sun, less so with less sun. Invincible will do well and doesn't show much change in color with full sun. Quilting Bee will take full sun, but it becomes a medium green, as will LS Lollipop. LS Black Satin needs lots of shade to stay dark, as it's of Ventricosa heritage, and is a bit of a problematic grower as well. LS Looking Glass becomes a light, bright green in full sun, and I've not grown Emeralds and Rubies.

I would suggest Devon Green. It keeps rather dark in full sun, leafe size becomes smaller tough

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
'Invincible' does very well for me in full sun, as does clausa var. normalis. Matter of fact the latter is beginning to take on weed-like qualities, that's how vigorous it is in full sun. You'll have to make sure you keep up with their much increased water demands of course.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
From my experience, anything that has a fragrant flower generally does better in the sun. I also second, 'Invincible' as a good sun hostas.

Thanks to all who provided input. I''m still thinking....

Canadian Shield (aka Devon Green)
Lakeside Lollipop - beautiful, with pure white blooms.
Java - like the above, but larger.
Lakeside Black Satin is a slow grower, Lakeside Coal Miner much more vigorous, and gorgeous (dark purple blooms), with shiny, dark, well veined leaves.
I wouldn't recommend Lakeside Looking Glass to anyone, as it's very very very very bug susceptible, and many who get it end up ditching it after a few years (I still have mine, but don't love it).
Have fun deciding!

Glad to hear that about LLG. Mine developed HVX and I had occasionally thought about trying again.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
On second thought, it occurred to me that I have an amazingly gorgeous all-green hosta thriving in full sun: One Man's Treasure. It sits in the hottest & sunniest spot of my property, and is going great guns. Just a "spoil the status quo" thought for you. Two golden beauties, little Midas Touch and big Fortunei Aurea (NOT Aureomarginata) are doing just as well on its flanks, go figure.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
Your OMT IS lovely. But the petioles aren't green. Leaves are gorgeous though and most of us like red in the petioles.
Enjoyed my visit to your garden on Saturday.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
You're quite right, Ann, OMT has dark reddish brown pets. But from any distance they're all but invisible, and the plant offers a nice hit of a solid green wave in the bed.

Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
Try Devon Green that holds wel in sun and shines like mad maybe Cordelia and Queen Josephine
Re: Sun Tolerant GREEN Hostas?
'Worldly Treasure' does tremendously well here in full sun. The thick, upright leaves with pointed tips hold the dark green color without bleaching out.
