First Hosta Eye Up!!

Post by kHT »

But I've got my pots ready to cover as they say we may see snow on the valley floor by the end of the week. We have had 2 weeks of 50s during the day with temps
no lower that 35 during the nights. Winter isn't over!!

ViolaAnn, keep it up there, please! We are looking at it dropping down here soon. Storming today with high winds, a good day to stay inside and sew.

I second that, Ann! It's reasonably warm here today, but heavy wet snow expected tomorrow.

Some of my usual early suspects are showing cataphylls, like this clausa var. normalis. They seem to cope with the colder temperatures we will still encounter quite well, good thing too, we're looking for temps to dip down to freezing level again by the weekend, and... heaven forbid... the distinct possibility of snow flurries.

I was just out weeding and ran into this - rectifolia 'white flower'. Nothing else around it is up. The spot is on the north side of my deck so doesn't get much sun this time of year. It may not get any direct sun now.

Sorry for the blur, I was in an awkward position trying to avoid stepping on things.

There are 8 sprouts showing.

Glad to see that - this is our first year so we're kindof anxious to see what things look like and how much they've grown. We're also in zone 6b but it seems like our property is always just about a week behind everybody else....lots of trees, in a valley...at least that's what I'm guessing the reasons are.

Looking good Karla, but i'm glad mine are well behaved, they stay put as long as the night temps are less than 40 F. I might see noses or eyes, but I do not want them to unfurl before the risk of night frosts are ower, .... so in a month or rather a goood month :D

Here is a Fragrant Bouquet that I have had for a couple of years. The pot sits in the garden until early February when I bring it into my garage where it never gets below freezing. So it is up a little earlier than the others.

I have eyes, in the ground, coming up in zone 5...yikes! My redbud are popping. The weather is like it should be in May/June. I love it, but I'm really hoping we don't get one of those late freezes... I'm on a tour this year and would hate to see that happen.

Lots poking up here, some unfurling. I have a weeping cherry tree that bloomed during the night, and my red bud should start blooming in the morning. Weird, for sure.

It was 80 today and has been over 70 the past few weeks. No wonder everything is coming up.

Temperatures have been around 60°F for the best part of a week right now, dropping to just above freezing at night.
Hosta eyes are showing everywhere, especially with the potted plants.
And as much as I love spring and the reappearing of the hostas, the last years they've always come a couple of weeks to soon.

Spells of night frost will come during the next month and a half, destroying every leaf that has started to unfurl.
So out come the night covers, trying to minimize the damage.

I hear ya Rob, most of ours are well protected. Record lows yesterday as we had snow, sleet, hail and high winds. Winter isn't over, more the same today!

Was just outside looking and found Pineapple upside down cake a few inches above ground. Has everyone else beat by far. Looks like the tallest eye might have gotten a little damage, as it was pretty cold last night. Journeys end and Guac are also putting up some good eyes. Getting excited! Hope the weather hols though. This is about two months earlier rising than last time.

There are way, way too many of them up here, over a month early. Montana Aureomarginata is starting to unfurl. It's just plain freaky. The redbud is in bloom, overlapping the star magnolia that usually blooms before anything else is even thinking about budding up. The magnolia only lasted a few days.
Flower buds on the apple trees are getting ready to break open, and everything is leafing out. Seven straight days of record breaking temps, and
it's possible we may have another one today. They were talking about a cool-down, and it seems that it will only drop into the 60's for daytime highs
for a couple days and then right back up to the 70's. I'm hoping we get a little rain. It's really, really dry out there.
And time remembered is grief forgotten,
And frosts are slain and flowers begotten.....
