Heuchera Seedling from GrannyNanny's seeds
Heuchera Seedling from GrannyNanny's seeds
This is one of the Heuchera seedlings that I grew from Phyllis' seeds last year. Look at the size of those leaves. My hand is hidden under a leaf.

OMG! HUGE!
I don't know what happened, Pat sent me tons of hosta and heuchera seed last year. But I had no success. None at all. A friend sent me hosta seed a month ago, and still no germination. I have a ton of other seedlings in the basement. But no heuchera or hosta babies for me.
But hey, I'm happy to see you with such a prize!

What big gorgeous leaves! That would be a fun hybridizing line - breed for extra-large plants with large leaves. Bring out several new varieties specifically designed to be large showy perennials. Imagine a plant with lovely leaves like h. 'green spice' but the leaves are 12 inches across and it gets three feet high and wide with 5' bloom stalks loaded with small flowers. That would really cool.

Wow!!! I was really suprised to see this thread from 2005. The new Heuchera Forum brought it back to life. I had forgotten that I even posted that pic. Thanks for all the nice comments everyone! I'll get a current pic when they start putting out new growth.
flowerchild, I'll let you know if it grow well and multiplies.
Dori, You will love growing them. They were really easy to grow. They are so cute when they first come up.
Reldon, I'll be careful.
Mike, That sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure I am up to the task. I've never even collected seeds from my heucheras. I think I will have to practice on hostas before I try hybridizing with those tiny heuchera flowers.
tma, I don't know what could have gone wrong with yours. You should definitely try again.
Lucy, I don't see a thread on how to start them. I grew mine inside under lights. I just sprinkled the seeds lightly into my container (I think I used an aluminum baking pan), gently pressed them into the moist soil and covered them with the plastic lid. I don't remember how long it was before they germinated. I think I removed the lid when they had their first true leaves.
This year, I haven't started a thing inside. I winter sowed half of each of two packets that GrannyNanny sent me. No germination yet but I'm confident that when it warms up enough I'll see sprouts.
