Sport of Hosta 'Liberty' with a viridescent margin
I noticed this sport of Hosta 'Liberty' in late spring because it seemed like the margin was turning a greenish yellow instead of staying bright yellow or lightening more. So I've watched it all summer long and the margin has turned more and more green. I can't wait to watch this one grow up and wonder if the extra green in the margin will make it grow bigger in time. It won't be as showy as Liberty but might be interesting.
What do you think? This is a Liberty that starts out with a bright yellow edge that turns to green by late summer.

Thank you for voting in the poll. I thought that might help me to get more honest opinions of this one
Re: Sport of Hosta 'Liberty' with a viridescent margin
If it ends up being Liberty without the margin I guess i don't see the point.

Even though I said I wouldn't buy it may be worth keeping for the curiosity. 'pends if it takes up too much room though.

It has the margin every spring and then the edge slowly darkens. There have been similar types of sports for other plants, and who knows, when it gets older it might be kind of interesting. In case you were wondering, my response to the poll is the 2nd option - it will be fun to watch, but I probably wouldn't buy itPhil wrote:If it ends up being Liberty without the margin I guess i don't see the point.

I would certainly keep it to see what it does.

Hmmmm Chris
How fast do it change the color and will it change to solid green or a 2 tone green ?

Re: Sport of Hosta 'Liberty' with a viridescent margin
A week ago it was more noticeably variegated, so it appears to take the whole summer to turn solid green on green. Trust me, it was bright yellow when these came up in March and it wasn't until May, 2 months later, that I noticed the edge on this one was looking more of a greenish/cream color. My first thought was actually to dig it up and throw it away, but then after it continued to get darker I decided to pot it up and watch it a few more years.
Re: Sport of Hosta 'Liberty' with a viridescent margin
My rationale for keeping it - it is a sport... might be unstable... who knows what will come from it next? You've got the space - keep it and watch it. As it is now, I don't think it has much appeal... but who knows what the future might tell?

Well it certainly isn't ugly even now, and I like hostas that change throughout the season, so it might have possibilities. I think what it needs to sell well is a catchy political name....you know...something about our disappearing freedoms (liberties).

Its worth watching. Who knows what it will end up looking like in a few years. I needed a voting button for a maybe buy.

Okay, I changed one word in the middle option - I wouldn't buy it "now". That sort of makes it a watch and see option
Thanks again for the opinions. Maybe in 5 or 6 more years we'll be able to revisit this one

couldn't help but think there might be something clever along the line of "taking liberties..."

I'm a fan of the ones with subtle coloring, so I'd certainly keep it and watch it.
